This scene is taken from an engraving by Le Mesle, illustrating the fable 'Le Cuvier' (The Washtub) by La Fontaine. However in the original drawing the lady's husband is inside the barrel, a detail the Chinese artist has omitted. Although several plates with this design are known (see lot 201), it would appear that dishes of this size are extremely rare.
