Tito Lessi, Italian (1858-1917)
Mihály Munkácsy, Hungarian (1844-1900)

Munkácsy's painting of the English poet John Milton and his daughters (1877-78) is located in the New York Public Library's galleries. Lessi's painting depicts the presumed 1640 meeting between Milton and Italian scientist Galileo Galilei at his farm in Arcetri following his condemnation by the Inquisition seven years earlier. For a similarly decorated pair of vases, see Christie's, New York, 25 October 2005, lot 72.
