Rectangular, on four circular stepped feet, the body and hinged cover decorated with opaque and translucent cloisonné enamel with stylized floral, foliate and geometric motifs, the cover applied with raised roundel enclosing an en-plein enamel coat of arms of Riazan' province, the sides applied with twelve en-plein enamel coats of arms of the Riazan' districts, each end with stylised swing handle, marked under base

Lot Essay

The province of Riazan' lies to the south-east of Moscow, and was from the 11th - 16th Centuries an independent principality, ruled by descendants of Riurik, the Varangian who became the first recognized ruler of ancient Rus', until it was conquered by Moscow and absorbed into the Grand Duchy. As a province [guberniia] of the Russian Empire, in 1802 it was devided into twelve districts [uezdy] centred around the major towns of Riazan', as provincial capital, Mikhailov, Zaraisk, Dan'kov, Pronsk, Spassk, Sapozhok, Skopin, Egor'evsk, Ranenburg, Kasimov and Riazhsk, as showned on the casket from front left moving to the right.
