The exact purpose of this vessel in unknown but it may be a drinking vessel or perhaps in view of the shape of the back top rim, a small jug. This appears to represent a postilion's boot, made of thick leather with a section of thick leather to protect the ankle from the stirrup. The geometric loop-ornament appears on two dated pieces, a mug (1647) and caudle-cup (1650), illustrated by Louis L. Lipski and Michael Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984, p. 102, nos. 727 & 729. A similar shard has been excavated at Platform Wharf, Rotherhithe, see Leslie B. Grigsby, ibid., p. 396.
