The Comte de Buffon (d. 1788) began his celebrated Histoire Naturelle in 1749, leaving it unfinished at the time of his death. His ideas on the mutability of species, which were examined by Darwin and influenced later students of evolutionary theory, are perhaps his most important contribution to speculative science.
