Château de la Palice, built between the 11th and 13th Century, was bought by James I de Chabannes in 1430 and is still owned by the Chabanne family. James I grand-son, James II, Marshal of France, added a red brick Renaissance wing at the beginning of the 16th Century, joining the fortified castle and a gothic chapel, built around 1470, giving the château the character it still preserves today.

A closely related bibliothèque sold Sotheby's London, 23-30 November 1984, lot 276.
