Of waved rectangular shape, the sloping sides decorated with Chinoiserie figures in landscapes, the interior with two pen-trays and four compartments, with acanthus-scrolled angles

Lot Essay

A closely related Japanese lacquer encrier is in the Wallace Collection (illustrated in F.J.B. Watson, Wallace Collection Catalogues: Furniture, London, 1956, F. 109) and was exhibited in the Bethnal Green Exhibition of 1872-5 (no. 1026). Watson notes a similar encrier in the Demidoff Collection, which was sold in the San Donato sale, Paris, 24 March 1870, lot 294
