Lot Essay

Charles Balthazar, maître in 1717.

This golden cartel, with Chronos concealed in its drapery bracket, celebrates the role of the sun-deity Apollo, and recalls the Roman sentiment Colligit ut Spargat, with Zephyr-winds assembling clouds so that the sun may better disperse them.
