The rectangular top with three quarter gallery and banded tooled gilt brown leather inset above two short frieze drawers, each with ormolu keyhole surround and further kingwood banded inlaid octagonal keyhole surrounds, the tapering square legs headed by cut-corner panels and cuffs suspending guttae, on replaced ormolu caps and casters, with banded leather-inset writing slide to each side, the drawer with later octagonal patches as keyhole surrounds to disguise earlier handle marks

Lot Essay

After about 1785, George Jacob, ma<->tre in 1765, produced a limited of quantity of case furniture, almost exclusively in mahogany. These pieces, sparingly decorated with ormolu, are extremly well-made and elegant, but never rose to the inventive heights reached by his seat furniture.
