Lot Essay

This fantastic sculpture is the epitome of the high quality of Chaumet's craftsmanship at the turn of the century. The skills of the sculptor, goldsmith, lapidary and jeweller are combined in this masterpiece which proclaims the benefits of Christianity on mankind. For purposes of contrast, different colours of gold have been used and the symbolism of the stones, sapphire, diamond, ruby, jade, labradorite and agate, is emphasised by the cutting. This piece embodies the reinterpretation typical in the late 19th- early 20th century of the great religious works of art of the Medieval and Renaissance goldsmiths.

Throughout, Latin inscription, prophecies, commandments, tenets of Roman law, accompany the figurative elements, representing the Gospel message and the Church's role in preaching it.

A fervent Catholic who spent a large part of his income on good works, Joseph Chaumet also used his command of the art of jewellery to express his faith. Christus Vincit was his response to the anticlerical legislation of Emile Combes who was threatening the Church with the expulsion of the religious orders and the confiscation of their property.
