CIRCA 1728, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK
Painted by J.G. Höroldt, the centre with a 'salami' medallion, the well with a band of interlocking gilt scrolls and Böttger-lustre strapwork centred by lozenge-shaped panels, the border with gilt scrolls and strapwork centred by Böttger-lustre flowerheads and divided by four panels painted with Orientals at various pursuits on terraces, one scene with figures by a pavilion with drapery and a round window, another with figures worshipping idols on a canopied altar, within four elongated quatrefoil Böttger-lustre panel cartouches with gilt, red and purple scrolls, within a gilt band, the underside with three branches of indianische Blumen (well with slight areas of wear, further minute wear)
8½ in. (21.7 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

A plate of very similar design in the State Collection, Dresden, with gilt lozenge-shaped panels instead of Böttger-lustre lozenge-shaped panels, is illustrated by Ulrich Pietsch, Johann Gregorious Höroldt 1696-1775 Porzellansammlung Zwinger, Dresden, Exhibition Catalogue (1996), p. 179.

Details of scenes on this plate are illustrated on p. 48. A scene with figures worshipping idols on a canopied altar, similar to that on this plate, occurs on the upper left corner of sheet 4 of the Schulz Codex, which is illustrated on p. 75.
