The vase copies an 18th Century original, which was probably given as a present by the Saxon Court to Louis XV of France circa 1742 and was modelled with emblems celebrating the glory of France. Cf. J. L. Sponsel, op. cit. p. 145 for a white example of the 18th Century and ibid. p. 144 for a similar vase made for Augustus III. See also Dr. K. Berling (Ed.), op. cit., p. 37, Fig. 68 for a white-glazed model of 1742. This adaptation of the original shape is painted with the arms as borne by Frederick Augustus I, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland
