Most with date cyphers for 1888, gilt globe and impressed uppercase marks, retailer's mark for Phillips, London, pattern nos. G4400 and G6374, various cyphers, gilt or parian monogram SMS to most, signed L(ouis) S(olon)
Each finely painted and tooled in white slip with a putto symbolic of the pursuit of Love on an oval panel and beaded gilt surround within a gilt foliate wreath and starred ground, the border with a band of trailing ivy between beaded gilt bands, comprising:
Two tall footed compotes, two short footed compotes and twelve plates

See Bernard Bumpus, Pâte-sur-Pâte, The Art of Ceramic Relief Decoration 1849-1992, Essex, 1992, pp. 132-134 for a discussion on the dessert wares prepared by Louis Solon at his home workshop for Phillips of London, circa 1888. In view of the very high quality and conformity of design, one might speculate that the present wares might have been destined for the Phillips display at the 1889 Paris Exhibition.
