The main sides are inlaid with mother-of-pearl panels, one carved with a scholar seated on a promontory surrounded by water, the other with a lady holding a fan standing beside an attendant on a terrace, and the narrow sides have a row of mother-of-pearl bosses, all against a reddish-brown lacquer ground inlaid with tiny florets. An apocryphal Qianlong incised mother-of-pearl mark is on the base.
