Lot Essay

Typically Neapolitan the lobed circular motif found on the front, top and sides differs slightly from the Genoese motif. The Genoese commodes tend to be constructed with the drawers sans traverse. Another typical feature of Neapolitan commodes is the veneered top which rests flush with the sides of the carcase. A related commode is illustrated in A. Putaturo Murano, Il Mobile Napoletano del Settecento, Naples, 1977, pl. XXVII b. Another similar Neapolitan commode is illustrated in L. Caumont Caimi, L'Ebanisteria Genovese del Settecento, Parma, 1995, p. 21, ill. IV.
