Carved and turned figures, the king and queen modelled as monarchs, one of each wearing a leather bicorn hat, the knights modelled as seahorses, turned rooks, bishops and pawns; in a pine box, the lid inscribed Schaakspel

Lot Essay

These sets have traditionally been attributed to Dieppe carvers, however, current opinion suggests these are more likely to produced by German carvers.
