Lot Essay

Although little documented, the sculptor Vinzenz Brix was born c. 1815 in Karlsdorf, and was known to have studied and worked in Vienna in 1833-39 and worked primarily in ivory. The Emperor Franz I commissioned pieces, however the present bust may serve as a commemorative bust as the Emperor had died the year before it is dated in 1835.
