John Makepeace is among the most important contemporary furniture designers and craftsmen in England. In the early 1970s, he decided to focus on the execution of well-crafted, handmade furniture. Throughout the years, Makepeace has concentrated on exploring the properties and possibilities of working in wood. During the 1990s, special commissions accounted for two-thirds of the designer's output.

Makepeace is also devoted to education. In 1977, he founded The School for Craftsmen in Wood (later known as Parnham College) in Dorset, England. The school not only promoted craftsmanship, but also design and entrepreneurship. Additionally, it served as a venue for students to exhibit and sell their works.
