Lot Essay

Although the ogee profile on these frames is typically found on late Louis XIV frames, it has been updated with early Louis XV ornament: trailing flowers, a ruffled shell, and asymmetrical rocailles, surmounted by a pierced and scrolled acanthus-sheathed surround, surmounted by a flowering urn flanked by fantastic architecture, each side set with a floral trail, the bottom centered by a double shell. The extremely delicate carving is of the highest quality and would have been appropriate to the small, probably 17th-century Dutch, panel paintings they originally housed.
