Impressive in scale, the present pair of candelabra are related to a model dated circa 1780 in the Petit Trianon at the Château de Versailles (H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 261, fig. 4.8.4). In the 19th century, bronziers reprised the work of their 18th century confrères including François Rémond and Pierre Gouthière, and the present candelabra, with their scrolling foliate bases and intricately chased branches, are a fine evocation of the esprit du XVIIIe.
