Designs for such obelisk chenets are illustrated by Marriette in Nouveaux desseins de meubles et ouvrages de bronze et de marqueterie inventés et gravés par André-Charles Boulle, chez Mariette. The distinctive oval portrait medallion is also characteristic of Boulle's oeuvre, and can be seen on his baromètres à pyramide (J.N. Ronfort, 'André-Charles Boulle: die Bronzearbeiten und seine Werkstatt im Louvre', Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol.I, fig. 1.15.1). Related models of chenets dated around 1700-1710 are illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I., p. 68, ill. 1.10.2 and 1.10.3., while a pair of this model was sold from the estate of Lucienne and Maurice Newton, Sotheby's New York, 13 December 2003, lot 115.
