Lot Essay

The pier-glass, with flowered and voluted temple-pediment, and veil-draped tablet corners, reflects the 17th century 'Roman' style of Inigo Jones (d. 1652) that was revived in the 18th century by publications such as W. Jones, The Gentleman or Builder's Companion, 1739 and R. Morris, Architecture Improv'd in a Collection of Modern ,Useful and Elegant Designs, 1757.
