LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY

The present pieces correspond to a design illustrated in Eleanor Coade's Etchings of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory, 1778 (no. 49, circa 1785). Such urns were amongst the most popular models from the factory. A single of the same design stamped and dated 'CROGGIN 1817' was sold Christie's, South Kensington, 16 September 2014, lot 450 (£10,625). William Croggon ran the Coade factory from 1813 until Eleanor Coade's death in 1821. His most prominent commission was his work at Buckingham Palace between 1826-28. Another pair stamped 'Coade Stone' without the lion masks was sold, The Michael Roberts Collection of Garden Ornaments, Christie's, Ashurst, Kent, 27 September 2004, lot 278 (£35,850); a further pair signed and dated 1795 sold Christies, Dunsborough Park, 19-20 June 2013, lot 168 (£13,000).
