The mounts, mark of Robert Hennell, London, circa 1775
Each stand boat-shaped, on four cloven hoof feet with acanthus terminals, with shaped sides and beaded borders, the sides repoussé and chased with husk garlands and ribbon-tied paterae, suspended from cast rams' masks, with two shaped handles, the base with two detachable condiment holders, each circular with beaded borders and three acanthus and beaded brackets, containing two cut-glass bottles for oil and vinegar, each with silver-gilt mount with beaded and ribbon-tied laurel garlands, the helmet-shaped spout with acanthus thumbpiece and hinged cover engraved with an heraldic badge within Garter motto and with duke's coronet above, with leaf-capped scroll handle, marked on collars and inside covers of bottle mounts

Sir Hugh Percy, originally Smithson, 1st Duke of Northumberland (1715-1786) married in 1740 Elizabeth Seymour, heiress of the Percy property, who was granddaughter of Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1736, and in 1756 was made a Knight of the Garter. He was privy councillor and then lord-lieutenant of Ireland under Grenville from 1763-5. He was made duke in 1766, and was Master of the Horse under Lord North from 1778-80. He died in 1786.
