Nationalistic motifs - the lion and oak leaves - figure prominently in the design of these chairs and may suggest that they were originally commissioned by a public office. The oak tree is Britain's national tree and the "heart of oak" is celebrated in the official march of the British Navy which may also suggest a Naval connections.
