Lot Essay

Luxurious chairs such as these were made to commemorate and accommodate the visits of important dignitaries which Queen Victoria sent to India on her behalf. A number of throne chairs of this style were made for the Prince of Wales' tour of India in 1875-76, including one with similar lion arm terminals made by Hamilton of Calcutta for Lord Northbrook, Viceroy of Indian from 1872 to 1876 (see A. Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, p. 282).
