These elegant figures celebrate the harvest, the autumnal season and the vintage as led by the wine-deity Bacchus accompanied by a caryatid Bacchante, and are designed in the Louis XVI 'antique' manner inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Their lapis lazuli plinths relate to similar plinths edged with acanthus ormolu borders, but also inset with micromosaic panels attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli, on a Roman inkstand in the Wallace Collection, London, illustrated in P. Hughes, The Wallace Collection: Catalogue of Furniture, London, 1996, Vol. III, pp. 1446-50, no. 305 (F501).
