A PAIR OF ITALIAN ORMOLU-MOUNTED LAPIS LAZULI, SIENA, ROSSO ANTICO AND WHITE MARBLE COLUMNS

Each with entasised column with foliate capital surmounted by an eagle seated on an orb, the stepped panelled rectangular pedestal with rope-twist framed specimen marbles, above a stepped plinth mounted with laurel baguettes, grotesque masks and maidens and on a square base, one with later metalic band to the base of the lapis column, the other with restored pedestal with later simulated specimen marble panels, the masks associated

Possibly acquired by John, Viscount Mountstuart, later 1st Marquess of Bute (1744-1814) when Minister to Turin 1779-80 for Cardiff Castle.
