Lot Essay

Models of puppies were popular amongst Westerners and made in large numbers for the export trade. A similar pair dated circa 1670-80 is in the collection at Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire, and are listed in a 1688 inventory. See N. Hiroko, The Burghley Porcelains: An Exhibition from the Burghley House Collection and based on the 1688 Inventory and 1690 Devonshire Schedule, Stamford, 1986, pp. 226-7, no. 92. Another example of a single model is in the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
