Lot Essay

The boar and stag are inspired by the original models by Quentin-Claude Pitoin (circa 1725-1777), who supplied bronzes d'ameublement to the Court from 1763 until his death. Examples were supplied in 1772 to the salon of Madame du Barry at Fontainebleau and are now in the Musée du Louvre. Louis XVI had another pair of this model in his library at Versailles which subsequently were moved to the Palais de Luxembourg. (See P. Verlet, Les Bronzes Dorés Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1987, p. 59, no. 51-52).
