The red and white striped silk in which these sofas are now covered, is copied from the silk covering that remained on one of the pair when they sold at Christie's in 1996. The same red and white silk appeared on several other pieces of furniture, including a pair of sofas with scrolled fluted ends and another larger one en suite, all from Cleveland House, 19 St. James's Square, London, and moved to Raby Castle, co. Durham when Cleveland House was sold and demolished. They were sold by The Lord Barnard, T.D., Raby Castle, co. Durham, Christie's house sale, 10-11 October 1994, lots 40-47.
