MARK OF TIFFANY & CO., NEW YORK, 1900, DESIGNED BY PAULDING FARNHAM

Paulding Farnham designed these jardiniers and sweetmeat dishes (lot 201) as part of a grand silver-gilt dinner service in the Italian Renaissance style for the Paris Exposition of 1900. A set of four candlesticks and a matching candelabrum from the service were sold in these Rooms, on 18 June 1998, lot 59 and 4 June 1988, lot 14. A coffee service sold in these Rooms, 19 May 2005, lot 23. The service was apparently retailed shortly after the Buffalo Exposition of 1901, as it was engraved with a monogram by Tiffany's in 1902. The candelabrum and the massive centerpiece from the service are illustrated in Janet Zapata, "The Rediscovery of Paulding Farnham, Tiffany's Designer Extraordinaire," The Magazine Antiques, April 1991, pp. 724-725, plates VIII and IX. Farnham was Art Director of Tiffany's and head of both the Jewelry and Silver Departments. He designed all of the silver and jewelry exhibited at the Paris Exposition of 1900.
