BELGIAN AND OTHER SILVER FROM THE NEW HALL COMMUNITY (Lots 40-68) THE ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE While the Order of the Holy Sepulchre has it's origins in the crusades of the 10th century, the branch which exists today has decended from the monastery of Denkendorf, founded in 1139 in Groningen and revived in the 15th century. Of the houses which were formed at that time only the one at Nieuwstad, later moving to Bons-Enfants in Liege, survived into the 17th century. In 1642 an English community was founded in Liege where Catholics from England could be educated. That community had moved into a house on Peirruese in 1644, an occasion which may have been celebrated with the acquisition of a silver-gilt ciborium and cover, hallmarked in Liege in that same year (lot 68). After occupying several different premises within Liege the community was forced, with the start of the French Revolutionary war and the annexation of Belgium, to make a more significant move, fleeing to England, arriving in August of 1794. THE NEW HALL The manor of New Hall, in Essex, was first given to the college of Secular Canons by Earl Harold, later King Harold, in 1062. The manor passed through many different owners during it's early years, including Henry VIII who acquired it from Sir Thomas Boleyn in 1517. From Henry VIII it was passed down to Elizabeth I who in turn granted it to Sir Thomas, 3rd Earl of Sussex. The New Hall was acquired by the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre in 1798.
