The use of entwined mermaids for the stems of these candelabros suggests that they were most likely conceived for domestic rather than ecclesiastical use, a related Spanish colonial mask-carved polychrome decorated candelabro is illustrated in A. Tullard, El Mueble Colonial Sudamericano, Buenos Aires, 1947, pl. 342.
