Lot Essay
Sir James Whitehead (1834-1917), 1st Bt., a Yorkshireman who had made his fortune in London, purchased Wilmington Hall, Dartford, Kent in 1896. The estate had many 'great cedars', and this pair of chests made from a cedar felled in 1909, were presented by Sir James to his son George Whitehead. Wilmington Hall was demolished in 1971, having been a school since 1950.
