Lot Essay
Palampores were extremely popular items of trade for all the trading companies such as the VOC or the East India Company. In some instances, they were commissioned but were also traded as piece goods. The exchange of design ideas between East and West was extremely lively. This example shows many influences foreign to India such as seen for example in the Chinese inspired roccaille base, and also in the distinctly European style of the lateral borders. The influence of floral patterns popular in European silks can be seen in the drawing of the flowerheads. Nonetheless, the piece retains a distinctly Indian character.
