PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF DR. LEONARD AND MRS. ANN MARSAK (LOTS 2495-2502)
Leonard and Ann Marsak were gifted historians and passionate collectors. Dr. Marsak taught at UC Santa Barbara, while Ann, a published historian, worked in land management, environmental activism, and local politics. The two were known for their sophisticated eye and keen interest in Chinese art, primarily jade carvings, which they began collecting in 1977.
The Marsaks traveled extensively, but it was their five-week trek across China in the summer of 1979 - they were among the first westerners to glimpse its interior in decades - that truly ignited their passion for Chinese art. They subsequently made a month-long journey up the Yangtze River in 1983 with their son Nathan, who often aided in the selection of objects for their collection, and who became an art historian in his own right.
The Marsaks collected through the 1980s and early 90s, focusing on works of the highest quality and rarity, and purchasing only the best examples of their type. Half of the collection was gifted to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art following Ann's death in 2001. The many treasures that remain are now offered here for the next generation of discernable collectors.
