A Palissy-type oval comport
French, probably school of Fontainebleau, moulded to the centre with the death of John the Baptist which takes place in a prison, the executioner, sword in hand, presenting the head to Salome who proffers a dish, a prisoner languishing in chains in the background, the rim moulded with gadroons and stiff leaves, enriched in typical brown, blue, green and ochre glazes -- 11½in. (293cm.) wide, 17th century (chips)
