Life for the Tsar or Ivan Suzanin, by Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1857), with libretto from G.F. Rosen, was first performed in 1836. The opera, a celebration of the Romanov dynasty and Russian patriotism, including genuine Russian music never heard before on the operatic stage, was an immediate success.
