Lot Essay

The top central inscription cartouche reads shahinshah mashrut-e Iran Ahmad 'Ali Shah (the constitutional ruler of Iran, Ahmed 'Ali Shah. The lower central inscription identifies Muhammed 'Ali as Sultan ma'zil-e Iran (the deposed Sultan of Iran). The juxtaposition of these two indicates that this rug must have been made very soon after the constitutional reforms of 1909 that brought Ahmad Shah to the throne.
