A PIERCED AGATE KNIFE HANDLE AND GOLD OPENWORK SCABBARD
CHINA, LIAO DYNASTY (AD 907-1125)
The grey agate handle with a gold mount at one end and carved in openwork with two pairs of egrets standing amidst lotus plants on one side and scrolling stems of sagitteria sagittifolia on the reverse between the plain, narrow sides, the chased gold scabbard also decorated in openwork with leafy foliate scroll, a band at one end with a split flower spray reserved on a ring-punched ground; with a slender iron blade
