The upper face of the cover finely carved in relief with a geometric pattern of Shou medallions and bats against a black ground, within a narrow band of scrolls evenly spaced with florettes, the rounded sides of lobed form depicting overlappying lotus petals, each lobe detailed with a prunus spray below a bird in flight alternating with a nandina spray below a butterfly, reserved on a diamond-diaper ground, repeated on the conforming sides of the box, the interiors and underside base lacquered black
