Meiji period (late 19th century)
The ovoid form with a lid, decorated in gilding and colored enamels over the transparent glaze with roundels of portraits of rulers of various countries and personnages of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, identified as Emperor Meiji, Ulysses S. Grant, George Washington, Napolean Bonaparte, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, a Manchu official, Admiral Nelson (shown as blind in one eye rather than as missing the right arm), and another tentatively identified as Alexander II of Russia on the lid, the roundels and brocade bands around the neck and foot lavishly embellished with various geometric patterns
