A Rare Black Stone Figure of Kubera

Carved in the round seated in lalitasana on a rounded base carved with jewel flasks, one tipped over to support his pendent right foot, his right hand resting on his knee holding a fruit in the open palm and holding the mongoose in his left, wearing elaborate beaded jewelry, his head slightly tilted in a benign expression surmounted by a multi-tiered conical headdress

As the god of wealth and regent of the North, Kubera (Jambhala) is accepted by Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists alike. Frequently depicted in later bronze sculpture throughout Southeast Asia, it is very rare to find a Pala stone sculpture.
