QING DYNASTY, 17TH/18TH CENTURY
The rectangular vessel is raised on four thick 'V'-shaped feet, with the sides decorated with Flowers of Four Seasons within stylised dragon scroll borders. The narrow sides are set with loose rectangular handles. The domed cover is intricately cast and reticulated with lotus scrolls below the elephant-form knop supporting a basket of auspicious objects on its back. Surrounding the cover rim is a broad band of enamelled lotus blossoms enclosed within archaistic scroll corners. Further floral designs are featured on the base.
9 in. (23 cm.) long, 7 1/2 in. (19.2 cm.) wide, 12 in. (30.5 cm.) overall high

The present lot is a rare example of a rectangular shaped censer. Compare a Qianlong-marked four-sided casket with gilt lion handles and finial decorated with Ming style floral designs, a gift of George Salting to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and illustrated by Sir H. Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonne Enamels, London, 1962, text p. 91 and pl. 67B.
