A rare court fan,
the leaf painted with Ceres in her chariot with Cybele, holding a panel inscribed 'j'aime toutes choses', the verso with Ceres and putti, the ivory sticks carved and pierced with gentlemen, dolphins and putti in scrolling leaves, the guardsticks pique in gold and set with diamonds, amber and other stones - 11in. (28cm.), circa 1740 (two sticks broken)

Cybele wore a tureted 'mural'crown' and travelled in a chariot drawn by lions. She personified Nature. Ceres was the goddess of the harvest.
