A RARE GOLD AND SILVER-INLAID BRONZE TRIPOD FOOD VESSEL AND COVER, DING
WARRING STATES PERIOD, 3RD CENTURY BC
Raised on four cabriole legs and with a pair of bail handles, the vessel is encircled by a bow-string band that separates a band of pendent petal lappets below and a band of criss-crossing scrolls above, that are repeated in two concentric bands surrounding a central whorl motif on the shallow domed cover, that is also set with three rings. The inlaid decoration is in gold and silver wire and some silver sheet.

A similar gold and silver inlaid ding and cover from Shaanxi Xianyang, which is dated to the 3rd century BC, is illustrated by J. So in Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, p. 61, fig. 106. Another, lent by C.T. Loo, is illustrated in the catalogue of The International Exhibition of Chinese Art, London, 1935-36, no. 391.
