The exact dates of the scholar Chen Xuekong are unclear, but he was known to have published during the Kangxi reign.
The work on this screen is very similar to that found on a pair of mother-of-pearl-inlaid lacquer rectangular table screens, dated 17th-18th century, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and the Art Gallery, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 24 September - 21 November 1993, pp. 180-1, no. 94. As with the panels of the present folding table screen, the pair of panels are also inlaid on the reverse with inscriptions.
