A RARE SET OF EGYPTIAN REVIVAL GEM-SET JEWELRY, BY TIFFANY & CO.
Creating a commotion among its European counterparts, Tiffany & Co. catapulted to the forefront of international design during the last half of the nineteenth century. Under the determined and focused vision of its founder, Charles Tiffany, the firm consistently won awards and the reluctant praise of it European rivals on the battlegrounds of the International Expositions. A uniquely "American-style" had been established and dazzled admirers with its outstanding craftsmanship, ingenuity and individuality, unlike any other American firm. During the Paris Exposition of 1867, Tiffany & Co. was awarded first prize for a display of silver tableware, the first time ever a US firm had received such an award. In the Paris Exposition of 1878, Tiffany walked away with numerous honors and Charles Tiffany himself was inducted into France's Legion of Honor and received a gold medal Praemia Digno from the Emperor of Russia. It was also during this exhibition that they introduced the mixed metal designs reminiscent of Japanese metalsmithing. By 1887, the demand for exquisite gemstones in the United States concluded with Tiffany's historic purchase of over one-third of French Crown jewels offered for sale in Paris. Paulding Farnham's superb enameled orchids and the entirely "American" theme of the Paris Exposition in 1889, with examples of Native American design, again astonished admirers with its distinctive beauty and workmanship. The craze for things Egyptian was spurred by Napoleon's conquest of Egypt in the early 1800's as well as the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, Verdi's New York production of Aida in 1873 and the discovery of King Tutankhamen's tomb in 1923. This brooch epitomizes Tiffany's sensitivity to relevant themes as well as their creativity in interpreting such influences to make it wholly their own. The exquisitely carved citrine head displays a luminosity and lends a three-dimensional quality to the piece, as if the subject is to be revered and respected. The diamond and sapphire headdress with peacock themes is gracefully executed in typical Tiffany fashion.
