Probably German, 16th Century Style
Depicted half length and facing to dexter, holding a book bearing the date '1564' and with the name of the sitter inscribed along the bottom 'I. CALVINVS.', in a later, parcel-gilt wooden frame with hinged metal support to the reverse,(cracks, minor wear to gilding of frame)
